“Green Lantern” Update: Sinestro Strong, But Not So Bad

Mark Strong looks like such a nice young man.

MTV’s Splash Page reported that Mark Strong is in talks to play villain Sinestro in “The Green Lantern,” not Jackie Earle Haley, as has recently been rumored. “Green” director Martin Campbell himself confirmed this.

Sinestro is a Green Lantern who eventually goes bad, that is, after training our Green Lantern of interest, Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds. In an interview with ComingSoon, though, Campbell made it clear that the Sinestro we’ll be seeing in his movie will still be the good guy/mentor to Jordan who is part of the origin story, rather than the future rival. Campbell says:

“…know Sinestro, for an example, is a character who goes over to the dark side, and of course, Carol, played by Blake Lively, in later versions becomes a bad guy as well. I think people will be able to see forward to the characters that in the comic went on to (become bad guys)… but people will be ahead of us on all that I think.”

So they’re pretty confident this is going to warrant a sequel, I guess. If it’s not a success then we’ll never get to see Strong do his bad guy specialty. Unless they haul him out for an eventual Justice League movie, something Campbell wouldn’t discuss.

Strong’s racked up a pretty impressive list of credits in the last year–he currently is in theaters in “Sherlock Holmes” and “Young Victoria,” and is in the upcoming “Kick-Ass” as well. Oh, and “Robin Hood,” too. And he just started filming “John Carter of Mars.” It looks like this stint as pre-baddie Sinestro might be one of his few non-villain roles, though. I guess he just looks like trouble, but if that earns him a paycheck, I’m sure it’s fine with Strong.
