Number one. Yawn sigh.
Happy Halloween–I hope you got the good candy.
1. Saw VII 3D $24.2 million
2. Paranormal Activity 2 $17 million
3. Red $10.7 million
4. Jackass 3D $8.5 million
5. Hereafter $6.5 million
Not a very exciting week. The new “Saw” movie didn’t do horribly, but it didn’t do great. The truly scary thing is that someone may decide it is enough to warrant more movies in the franchise. Sigh. The numbers for “Paranormal Activity 2″ look a lot worse than they really are, because last week’s $40 some million also included about $6 million from midnight screenings before the official opening (that also can mean last week’s numbers weren’t as good as they looked. Spin it anyway you’d like to). Still, they made the movie for about $.50, so everyone involved still can feel pretty good about themselves. The question here is whether the franchise continues, and if it does, will the budget go up–and if that happens, will that make the movie better or worse? The logical answer would be worse, but sometimes directors get greedy and start thinking, “If only I could have a few more million to do this one really cool set piece…”
“Red” continues to hold and show there’s an audience for action pictures starring older actors, or more generally that there’s an audience for movies about older people. So “The Dark Knight Returns as a Grandfather” isn’t out of the question a few decades from now. And forget a teenybopper “Spider-Man” reboot–the next one will be Spider-Man challenges the healthcare system and nursing homes.
Next week brings us more interesting choices. The Todd Phillips comedy “Due Date” has really funny trailers–let’s see how well they work. Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” is opening wide, banking on Perry’s name, I guess, but it’s not his typical movie. So we’ll see how that works. The acclaimed “127 Hours” is getting a limited release, then will expand. The good stuff is coming out. Finally.
