Parents who want their young (3-7 years old) kids to explore the computer on their own in a safe environment don’t really have a lot of options. You can try to configure a login on your own personal computer that might save your computer from them, but what about saving your kids from the computer? Kidos is a front-end for your computer that gives your children activities on your computer, while at the same time giving parents lots of control over what they see and do.
Available now for Mac or PC, Kidos is software that once installed allows you to create a walled garden for your kids on your computer. They have their own login, and from there they have a bunch of things they can do. The options are:
Messaging: Send messages to people via an address book that is created by parents
Art: Drawing/painting on a canvas
Videos: View video files that parents place inside the Kidos system for them to use
Books: Content available for download from Kidos
Pictures: View image files that parent’s place inside the Kidos system
Games: It comes with Tic Tac Toe, but there are others you can download
Music: Listen to music files
Web: Visit web sites that parents explicitly allow them to visit
On the parent’s side (not pictured) there is an interface that gives you complete control over what your kids see and interact with. You can also send and receive messages from your kids through the Kidos system.
Personally, I have been trying to find a home computer solution for my kids for a long time, and I’m planning on downloading Kidos soon and setting it up for my kids. I can’t vouch for it personally yet, but I’ll let you know when I do.
Download Kidos for free from KidosComputer.com
