Hurricane Fay? Tropical Storm Fay has now emerged off the west coast of Haiti and is moving westward away from the island of Hispaniola. This will provide the storm an opportunity to strengthen into Hurricane Fay.

A lack of strong wind shear will aid in the intensification so Fay is expected to strengthen to a Hurricane.

At 11 a.m. EST, Fay was located about 95 miles west-northwest of Port Au Prince, Haiti, and about 130 miles southeast of Guantanamo, Cuba.

The storm is moving west near 15 mph. Tropical storm force winds of 45 mph, with higher gusts, extend up to 105 miles from the center of the storm.

For now, the primary threat will be life threatening flash floods and mudslides in Hispaniola, spreading across parts of eastern and southern Cuba later today through Sunday as Fay is expected to dump 5 to 10 inches of rain.

Tropical storm warnings remain in effect in Haiti, the Turks and Caicos islands and the southeastern Bahamas. Tropical storm watches have been issued in Jamaica, the central Bahamas and the Cayman Islands.

A hurricane watch, tropical storm watches and warnings are in effect in several provinces in Cuba. Tropical storm watches are in effect for both Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

Hurricane Fay is forecast to reach Category 1 hurricane strength by the time it moves over Cuba on Monday.

The Florida Keys and south Florida could see impacts beginning as early as Monday evening from this system.
