Jay Leno Feels Sorry For Conan O’Brien But Continues To Dodge The Blame Game

It’s everyone’s fault but his. Jay Leno thinks Conan O’Brien’s “Tonight Show” exit is unfair, but he isn’t taking the blame. The returning host of the NBC late night show is hoping to repair his tainted good guy image and appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show to explain his side in the mess.

Winfrey let Leno say his thoughts on the late night show fiasco on NBC, in which after promising O’Brien his spot six years ago, he suddenly took it back.

He said the peacock network told him to step down so he did “tell a white lie on the air. I said, ‘I’m going to retire.’ It was just maybe easier that way.”

He stepped down in the summer of 2009 and let his successor take over “Tonight.” But the ratings weren’t delivering the ratings they had hoped for. His prime time program, “The Jay Leno Show,” garnered a dismal figure, while “Tonight” under O’Brien’s reign wasn’t able to equal his.
