Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps owes the State of California ,000, a paltry sum compared to his reported million wealth. A tax lien filed last year against the power swimmer is said to be left unpaid.

According to the lien filed last year and obtained by TMZ, the 24-year-old athlete owes ,289.16 for tax returns in 2005 and 2006.

The amount remains unpaid.

Phelps had a string of scandal in the recent years. In 2004, he was arrested for DUI and was placed on probation for 18 months. In February this year, a photo showing him smoking from a marijuana pipe was leaked to the press in August.
