Oscar Original Song Shortlist Announced

“Hannah Montana: The Movie” makes me think OSCAR!!

The Academy announced this year’s list of songs that will be eligible for nomination in the Best Original song category. Here’s the good news for Miley Cyrus fans: five songs from the “Hannah Montana” movie made the list. Here’s the good news for non-Miley Cyrus fans: Only two songs from one film can be in the final group of five nominations; if more than five songs from one movie are eligible, only the two highest vote getters will be nominated.

This seems like a good time to discuss the voting process, as described by The Hollywood Reporter:

On Jan. 12, the Academy will screen clips featuring each song, in random order, for voting members of the music branch in Los Angeles. Following the screenings, members will determine the nominees by an averaged point system vote. If no song receives an average score of 8.25 or more, there will be no nominees in the category. If only one song achieves that score, it and the song receiving the next highest score shall be the two nominees. If two or more songs (up to five) achieve that score, they shall be the nominees.

And while we’re on this rule kind of thing, what makes a song eligible fo rhe Oscar? Again, THR explains:

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

Note that that’s an “intelligible” rendition, not an “intelligent” one. So diction is more important than musicality. Just fyi in case you’re putting together a soundtrack for your film. And I know you’re all working on one!

Now here’s the list of eligible songs. No, I don’t recognize about 99% of the titles.
