There are four dancing duos left on “Dancing with the Stars,” but only three slots in the finale. Tonight the four remaining celebs — Joanna Krupa, Mýa, Donny Osmond and Kelly Osbourne — compete for a spot in the finals. Each of couples performed three dances tonight: a ballroom dance, a Latin number and the Knock-Out dances they have been working on for several weeks. Monday night, each of the stars was required to let go of their partners and do a 15-second solo in the Latin dance. Kicking off the night with the tango were Donny and his professional partner Kym Johnson, who struggled with a costume mishap. Head judge Len Goodman took him to task: “The sadness of it is when you did your Argentine tango, it was so great. I don’t know if it was Kym’s dress, or…” At this point, Donny interrupted and blamed it on his sister, saying, “I saw Marie.” Bruno Tonioli pointed out, “You completely lost it. Usually, you are a master of disguise. Tonight, you couldn’t cover it up. You went to pieces. At this stage of the preceding, it is tragic.” Carrie Ann Inaba commiserated with the couple, saying, “There wasn’t a lot of the push-pull. I know there was a lot of drama in your head. I think you handled the costume misfortune pretty well.” They received 21 out of 30 points. Up next were Joanna and Derek Hough dancing the Viennese Waltz. Bruno complimented, “This waltz had the grace of angels in heaven. But there was a slight hesitation that didn’t allow it to get up to paradise.” Carrie Ann said, “I think of how you started, but you trusted Derek and I have seen you turn into this amazing statuesque beauty when you dance. You need to work on your reaching.” Len praised, “Your hold, when you are dancing together, is as good as any professional. I loved the choreography. Overall, it was the most beautiful dance.” The judges awarded Derek and Joanna 27 points. Kelly and Louis van Amstel performed their Latin dance: the rumba. Carrie Ann said, “I totally get it. You brought me to tears. You aren’t our strongest dancer, but you have a magical quality. You reached right into my heart and you made me love you.” Len told her, “I can’t be as airy fairy as Carrie Ann. I must say, and I have said it before, you have turned into a competent dancer. I don’t think this was one of your best dances, but not your worst.” Bruno added, “You are endearing. The rumba has to have a relentless eroticism. You have to push those hips to the extreme. Some of the figures, I commend you for attempting, but some things were not as perfect as they should have been.” They earned 24 points. Wrapping up the first round of dances was Mýa with partner Dmitry Chaplin, dancing the waltz. Len complimented, “It had romance. It had elegance. You were in total control. I thought it was an absolute joy to watch.” Bruno raved, “That was love set to music — flying high and defying gravity. I absolutely loved it.” Carrie Ann told them, “I loved it, too. You have the potential to get 10s every time, but I felt tonight you were not completely connected in your hold. Work on that.” The twosome scored 28 points. Donny and Kym kicked off round two with the samba, performed to his first No. 1 hit song, “One Bad Apple.” Bruno told them, “It was professional. You came back and nailed it. It was effortless and carefree. That is what the samba should be and that is what you did.” Carrie Ann disagreed, pointing out, “It was better than the last one, but it felt a little sloppy for you, Donny. You are this incredible performer. You know how to wow us. I think you were dancing small. I expect so much from you because you have it.” Len said, “I have to agree with Bruno. It was an absolute metamorphosis. You came out strong and determined.” They received 26 points. Joanna and Derek returned for their second performance with the cha cha. Carrie Ann said, “I love it. I love how you can go from being the statuesque beauty to the wild child. You are a dancer. I thought you did a great job.” Len critiqued, “It was clean. It was quick. It had a great rhythm to it. A little bit more cheeky would have been good.” Bruno added, “Just natural sex. It just oozes from every where. What I like about you is you are not a dancer. Both in ballroom and Latin achieving the standards you have is quite amazing.” Joanna and Derek were awarded 27 points. The quickstep was the second dance for Kelly and Louis. Len praised, “There are two people I am sure are really happy: your mum and me. That was totally beyond my expectations. Not only as a dancer, but as a person and a performer, you have blown me away.” Bruno enthused, “You were like Speedy Gonzales. You just lost one step there. Overall, it was absolutely a twinkly star.” Carrie Ann cheered, “Go get them, Kelly Osbourne. You nailed it. You weren’t just keeping up, you were right with Louis. That was fabulous.” The judges’ tally was 27 points. Mýa and Dmitry returned with a dance that Bruno labeled “sensational.” Carrie Ann fanned herself, saying, “Hot beyond belief. That solo was slamming. Not only were you amazing, it was difficult choreography.” Len turned poetic, saying, “Tutti frutti what a booty! Tonight we are looking for who deserves to be in the finale. You should be there.” Mýa and Dmitry received the only perfect score of the night: 30 points. In the Knock-Out dance competition, which was a 30-second performance, the celebs and their partners chose the dance and the music. Donny and Kym chose the jitterbug. Carrie Ann said, “You needed this dance to be good, but you got your mojo back.” Len told them, “Two out three [dances] is not bad because this was a winner.” Bruno agreed, adding, “Full of vigor, recharged.” They were rewarded with a 27. Joanna and Derek selected the salsa. Len commented, “These dances are like hors d’oeuvres. That one was hot, tasty and full of spice.” For Bruno, it was delicious and flirtatious.” Carrie Ann commended them, saying, “You generate heat. I like that you brought back your signature move. I loved it. I would love to see you in the finals.” They also scored a 27. Kelly and Louis performed the cha cha. Bruno joked, “It might have been a quickie, but it worked for me. Your feet had precision and you finished your moves with your arms very sharp.” Carrie Ann said, “You had such a great night. You finished your lines tonight. Great job.” Len told them, “At the start of season nine, you struggled doing one dance. Tonight you did three, all to a very high level.” Kelly and Louis also earned 27 points. Mýa and Dmitry wrapped up the night with a spicy cha cha. Carrie Ann said “Mýa, you have great hip action and you threw some tricks in, but something about the beginning wasn’t speaking to me.” Len teased, “I was disappointed … because I wanted it to go on a bit longer.” Bruno complimented, “It was like an action-packed trailer for a blockbuster … and I will be in line to see the whole feature.” The compliments resulted in 29 points. On Tuesday night’s results show, airing at 9 p.m. on ABC, entertainment will be provided by Grammy Award-winning artist Alicia Keys, multi-platinum artist Leona Lewis and Barry and Robin Gibb of the legendary Bee Gees. Also returning to the ballroom for a special dance performance is Melissa Rycroft.
